( the last two weeks had been incredibly busy and turbulent for reira. with more people under her, working for her, she had to actually put in effort towards her work. she wasn't passionate about it beyond just keeping the band together and playing her role perfectly. so she had been holed up with ren the last few days, strumming along to his bass, a synth in the room and endless amounts of papers filled with notes. she hadn't really seen or been around sanji for a bit, simply opening the door to grab her meals and offering a slightly apologetic look. she was doing this for him after all- for takumi, ren, naoki, her assistant and of course sanji. she needed to make sure things were perfect or everything would come crumbling down.
today would be another day like this, or at least she figured it would be. the tyrant that ran the show would will it to be. so in her bed, curled up under a blanket and fighting off having to wake up for a few minutes, she mentally prepared herself for the list of things she had to do. it wasn't until her phone began to go off, that she finally opened her eyes and realized she was in bed all alone. she didn't want to admit it, but her focus as of late had been on sanji. she woke up to him, ate her meals with him [usually], and spent her nights being loved by him. with takumi barely around due to his new wife, she found herself slowly forgetting about him- or at least she tried.
tell your body guard to stop blowing up my phone.
you have the day off, do whatever you want.
the bright light illuminated her face as she read those words from takumi. what the hell was he talking about? sanji had been speaking to him?
confused and concerned, she sprang out of bed and into the living room of the rented room she had been in. she walked out wearing nothing but a tank top and her panties, phone in hand. it was there that she looked up and saw an endless amount of decorations and gifts in the room, the smell of food filling her senses up. )
[ sanji doesn't blame her at all for the little time they've had together as of late. after all, her time and attention isn't solely his own and most times he considers himself plenty lucky to receive any of it at all, for all that he finds himself undeserving of such wonderful spoils. still, what does concern him is the thought that reira might be getting overworked, especially when that idiot takumi is concerned, and being aware of what day is fast approaching, sanji puts himself into action to be sure that she gets the time of rest that she deserves for it.
it's why when reira steps out of the door she'll find that the main room is well decorated in celebration of her birthday, pink and yellow balloons scattered around by the dozens in bright colors, matching plumerias set in small vases around the room on every surface. and in the center table, a scatter of dishes, from arugula salads with homemade vinaigrettes, to a well prepared salmon, french onion soup topped with cheeses and bread, and specialty wines to pick from.
as soon as her voice is heard, sanji himself appears from the kitchen, dressed fairly normal in his usual button-up white shirt, except he's also wearing a newly purchased custom trapnest apron from their latest collection of merchandise — except it lacks the rest of the band except a professional shot photograph of reira herself right in the center. his face beams with a bright smile as he throws up his hands. ]
Hello, my beautiful Layla-san~ happy birthday to you, darling!
( the deliberate choice in colors doesn't escape her because as carefree as she could be, such a detail moved her. there was something else that was bothering her too, the fact that this was all done by sanji for her when really-
takumi should have been the one to do this. not that she wasn't ecstatic and full of happiness over such kindness from sanji, but deep in her heart she wanted the one she had loved for years now to even consider something like this for her. instead he had sent off a text that screamed annoyance to her, failing to mention what day it was.
with a heavy heart, she turned towards sanji and took in his appearance and the way he didn't hesitate to congratulate her on her special day. the apron, his bright smile, it all just made her run immediately into his arms to hug him. she buried her face into his chest, hiding the tears the threatened to pour down her cheeks. )
You did all this for me?
( the food, the decor, the gifts, it was all for her and she couldn't help but feel tearful about the whole thing. she couldn't even remember when she may have told sanji about her birthday, but clearly he cared about her to find out and organize all of this.
this was far more than someone like her, who would betray him in a heartbeat, could deserve. )
You shouldn't have...just having you by my side would have been enough.
[ all that sanji had really wanted was for reira to be gifted something on this day that would do enough to shower her with all the love she deserved, something that would make sure she knew how wonderful and special she was. it's all he can really hope for when the moment finally comes in sharing his surprise for her, his natural excitement shared in the glee of his smile and the happy wonder of his eyes.
his smile falters but for a moment when she seems genuinely stunned, a worry suddenly befalling him that maybe she doesn't like this, that maybe she wouldn't have been so keen on such a surprise at all. before the thought could linger for long, she runs forward towards him, burying in his chest, and all too instinctively, he brings his arms around her, nearly protectively. ]
Of course I did. You deserved only the very best today. [ his smile returns, though it softens with her close proximity, his lips brushing over the top of her hair. ] Just as you deserve it every single day, Layla-san. But today is especially for celebrating that you exist.
('but today is especially for celebrating that you exist'
his words moved her, propelling a thought and emotion she hadn't really given attention to in a long time. she was beautiful, she knew this, but deep inside there was a sense that she didn't deserve any of this. such beautiful and thoughtful words coming from sanji though-
she never really had noticed, but no one else had ever spoken to her like this. it made her want to truly cry and sulk in her emotions but she didn't. this day was as much hers as it was sanji's, considering the amount of effort he put in and it was clear he wanted to spend it with her. so she took a deep breath and pulled her head back, opting to look up at him with such a sweet and soft smile. with her tears forced back, she moved her hands to rub his back and finally his arms, bringing her hands down to his own.
with fingers intertwining into his own, she finally spoke. )
Thank you Sanji, this is the sweetest thing anyone has ever done for me. I won't let any of the food go to waste, I promise.
